A5199 south of Shearsby. Crossroad traffic collisions

Following the Parish Council contacting Highways regarding the traffic collisions, the following response has been received

Thank you for your enquiry regarding road safety concerns at the crossroads on the A5199 south of Shearsby.

We are sorry to hear of the recent collisions at the crossroads, unfortunately, we do not yet have the details for what may have occurred here – such as direction of travel, weather and lighting conditions and potential contributory factors. It can take some time for the data to be received from Leicestershire Police before we can analyse it, this is presuming that Leicestershire Police attended the collision and that it was recorded as an injury collision.

We identify road safety problem sites or routes across Leicestershire and annually review collision cluster sites within the County where groups of injury accidents have occurred within the most recent five years, or more specifically looking at the most recent five years of available data as there is a delay between a collision occurring and that data being validated and available to us. Where patterns in the data are obvious, and an intervention can be identified, justified and implemented within the available budget, schemes will be developed and mitigation measures provided. Throughout the year this cluster site analysis is reviewed and repeated so that we are aware of any emerging problem sites.

As a result of our own investigations, we have noted the current measures include the following:

-Blue rumble strips on both A5199 approaches to the crossroads.

-The permitted signing is already in situ in the form of crossroads ahead warning signage accompanied with 'Reduce you speed' and 'Slow' carriageway markings.

-In addition, this location has recently benefited from upgraded Vehicle Activated signs (crossroads warning and slow down message) on both A5199 approaches.

- Throughout the 50mph extent, there are 50mph repeater signs.

We can also confirm that recent lining works were carried out at these crossroads. The existing junction markings, double centre lines, arrows/triangles as well as carriageway edge lines on Bruntingthorpe Road, Saddington Road and A5199 Welford Road have all been refreshed.

Please be assured that we review collision data frequently to allow us to continue to drive collision numbers down as best we are able. This will be undertaken once we have the full details of the collisions from the Police.
